Jigjiga University warmly commemorates the 32nd World AIDS Day through different activities
" In addition to running races for both female and male students, service for voluntary testing of HIV was made available in which more than 700 people tested and realized their HIV status. At the end of the Day, JJU community gathered for an awareness raising on AIDS where higher officials of the university gave speeches on the topic and key messages were conveyed through poems and other artistic performances. Speaking at the event, Dr. Abdi Ahmed (acting president of Jigjiga University) advised the students to give high value for themselves and protect themselves from factors causing HIV infections by encouraging them to test their blood at the university’s clinic and Jigjiga University Sultan Sheik Hassen Yabere Referral Hospital, where they can get the service for free. Meka Kedir, director of Women, Youth Disability and HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Directorate, on her behalf mentioned that the World AIDS day is celebrated every year to remind that HIV is still transmitting highly and the younger group of the society is very vulnerable, adding that women are especially prone to the transmission of the virus. She has also advised the students to get tested for the virus and know their health status by appreciating those students who have made an HIV test during the three days campaign. At the closing of the commemoration of the World AIDS Day, top three winners of the running races were rewarded and Jigjiga University will continue to build habits that can help students avoid HIV infection. "
